His father, Alexander Stepanovich Bondarenko, graduated from the Kharkov Military Academy, and after demobilization he worked as a geologist. Mother, Irina Nikolaevna Shcherbakova, graduated from the Kazan Pedagogical Institute, a teacher of Russian language and literature.

They did not want to accept him into any theater university, and only at the Shchukin College did they see Evgeny as a future comedian.
The actor graduated from the B.V.Shchukin Higher Theater School in 1986.
